Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
With its lush blackberry nose and savory black cherry taste, the 2016 Port is a wonderfully rich fortified wine that is balanced nicely with rich and sweet characteristics. The huge nose of concentrated ripe blackberries is followed by big, rich mouth-filling flavors of caramel and dark chocolate.
Vineyard Notes
The Souzäo varietal, a traditional Portuguese grape variety, has taken root to its California home in the Lodi AVA. Lodi, with its classic Mediterranean climate, has similar temperatures and rainfall to its native Portugal. Lodi is an ideal growing region for world-class winegrapes in the mineral-rich sandy loam, well-drained soils.
Production Notes
The 2016 Ironstone Vineyards Port is a Portuguese-styled Port made from a classic Portuguese port varietal, the Souzão grape. These premium grapes were allowed to ripen on the vine for an extended period of time before harvesting to ensure richer, fuller varietal characteristics. After harvest, the wine is allowed to mellow in mature French and American oak barrels for fourteen months. To ensure quality, Ironstone practices the same traditional production methods used in the Douro region of Portugal where the very best ports in the world are made.
Food Pairing Notes
The deep, long and lingering finish of this port is ready to enjoy with berry cheesecakes or dark chocolate truffles.
Other Notes
Sustainable Viticulture: At Ironstone, the vineyard manager, has at his disposal, a variety of sound, ecological vineyard practices which can be employed depending on what Mother Nature delivers during the growing season. We use crop reduction, leaf removal, organic materials, and drip irrigation to improve the quality and intensity of flavors. Cover crops, which attract beneficial insects, are also employed. In addition, we place owl and wood duck boxes around the vineyards and ponds helping to preserve the surrounding habitats.

Excellent Port with a very fruit forward taste, sweet and perfect with a nice dark chocolate or tart cheesecake. If there was ever a tawny port I might have to buy the entire run!
